Neon Art in Paris

The twentieth century for the modern and contemporary art was a time of experimentation and constant breakdown of the means of representation used for creation. As well as technology, social and political changes, art has its metamorphose scope from various media and geographies. Today, we have art created from all possible spheres, from classical arts such as sculpture and painting to new more complex conceptual proposals spanning the video, film, installation, etc.. Among all these proposals and forms of creation, neon became a matter of the work of many artists. These irreverent pieces of art will be shown at La Maison Rouge, the first of its kind in Paris.

Paris has certainly been, throughout the twentieth century, an epicenter of universal cutting-edge art. From the experimental Dada, Surrealism, New Realism and the Nouvelle Vague, among many other streams. The confluence of artists from around the world that frequented this city, make it still retains its unique presence in the world of contemporary art. Although somewhat neglected by the constant presence of New York and Berlin among the most important contemporary art centers in the world, in Paris the confluence of galleries, museums and research centers of contemporary art has not lost their way.

Perhaps the biggest dilemma for a young artist in a city like Paris, is the high cost of housing and expenses in general, which have made that many of these artist look for other vibrant, “new” cities as Barcelona, Amsterdam and Vienna, where it is still possible to get accommodation at much lower costs. However, when finding a space for artistic development, any young artist should consider as essential details such as social networking, galleries, institutions, and institutional market to meet its requirements or to be able to take a position right in front of his work. Being of course, politically-correct-incorrect.

It was a hundred years ago, when the French scientist George Claude created what is known today as a neon tube. This ingenious invention was first presented at the World Exhibition in Paris. Some years later, in 1923, it started being marketed. Over time, the use of neon was preeminent in the streets of some of the most important cities in the world. By publicity or advertising, neon began to populate the streets. Since the 17th of February, La Maison Rouge will present the first major international exhibition of art made with neon since the 40′s to today. Thus, the exhibition brings together pioneers such as Lucio Fontana, François Morellet, Bruce Nauman, Joseph Kosuth, Maurizio Nannucci among others.
